Biography

A Chicago born resident(b. 2001), Luis has overcome several challenges during his music journey. Started learning the trombone at the age of 15, which is unfortunately very common in the Chicago school system. He self taught on playing the trombone, along with an interest in composition and conducting but rely on composition as his second favorite hobby.

After careful consideration, Luis decided to attend the University of Illinois Chicago. During his time in UIC, his trombone professor was Andy Baker, followed by Marc Mellits for composition and Nicholas Carlson for conducting. In May 2023, he graduated UIC with a Bachelor in Music Performance with a minor in Education.

Immediately, he attended Northeastern Illinois University, where his teacher was Steve Duncan. However, Luis only stayed for a year before taking a break from school. During his time away from school, he made his first composition debut, premiering his Symphony No. 1 with the South Loop Orchestra.

Currently, Luis is attending his first year at Roosevelt University where he is obtaining his Master in Music Performance. His teacher are Reed Capshaw, Ignacio del Rey, and former CSO principal, Jay Friedman.

Despite focusing on school, Luis has been in a number of ensemble. He’s recently been studying Latin music and join the Lakeside Latin Pride Band where he is principal trombone. Additionally, Luis is one of the founding members for Sonora Macondélica, a psychedelic Cumbia based on region of South America with a mix of Afro-sounds.
